How
does being a scientist affect our view of the world and how we operate in it? A
scientific training can be very useful - in many areas of life, but are there
less obvious and potentially negative aspects to a science-based outlook? In
this first Lancaster Café Scientifique, we embark on a debate on the advantages
– and the limitations - of a career in science.
Diane Hope brings a view from both sides of the fence to the debate. She was a
research scientist for 20 years before starting a new career as a sound recorder
and radio producer three years ago. She has worked as a scientist in exploration
geology, soil science, water chemistry, the global carbon cycle and most
recently she managed a large interdisciplinary urban ecology research programme
at Arizona State University. She will engage the audience in a debate about how
being a scientist can enhance – and potentially limit – one's world view and
invites people from all backgrounds and career paths to come along and join in
the discussion. |
